Favourite scenes in Friends - The One With Rachel's Other Sister

I've not done of these for a while but I saw this episode this week and laughed like a drain. This is one of my all-time favourite Friends episodes, every character is written perfectly and Christina Applegate is wonderful.

Let's assess:

Joey: the sub-plot about Joey forgetting to show up to the Days of our Lives Thanksgiving parade and Phoebe teaching him how to lie still makes me laugh. Racoons! When Phoebe says to him "No! No racoons!" I always giggle. Also, when Rachel and Amy fight and Monica says "somebody do something!" Joey replies "Stop them? Throw some jello on them!"

Rachel: the inner-bitchiness of Rachel is one of my favourite things about her. When Amy says Jill (their sister) gained 15 pounds, Rachel simply asks, "face or ass?" I love that.

Monica: Monica and her fancy plates. Bless her. When she tells them all to eat their food without using the plates and then a scene or two later insists she is fun, Phoebe's response about how she's all about the fun while trying to eat her meal without a plate is hilarious.

Chandler: this isn't so much Chandler's episode but he does get to call Monica Crazy Plate Lady.

Phoebe: Phoebe gets some great lines in this but it's all about the racoons.

Ross: Not normally one I guffaw at but he's good here. Rachel: "I would like to invite Amy to Thanksgiving." Ross: "It'll be like the pilgrims bringing the Indians syphilis." I just googled how to spell syphilis and it was on the images page. I am going to have nightmares.

Anyway, the entire discussion about who gets Emma if Rachel and Ross die is brilliant. Joey: "Who has to die for me to get her?" Amy not realising she's met them before is also hysterical. Her insistence to Monica: "No, she was this really fat girl who followed Rachel around!"

I don't think there is a dud moment in the entire episode. Even Jennifer Aniston's hair looks beyond great in this. I still miss Friends and I think I always will.

Favourite scenes in Friends - Phoebe finds out about Chandler and Monica

This still makes me laugh, when Phoebe says "my eyes! my eyes!", it cracks me up and I love the way Rachel makes out the screaming is because they are so excited about Ross getting the apartment. You can watch it here.

Xanadu

Yet again I am astounded that I've not yet covered the masterpiece that is Xanadu. This post is simply about the song, not the film because I've never seen the film. Yes, it's true and I can't quite believe it either. The song is magnificent however. One of the greatest introductions to any pop song, delivered with perfection by our Livvie (as I like to call her).

It also reminds me of another favourite scene in Friends. I can only find it with Portuguese subtitles but watch it here. It cracks me up every time.

Favourite scenes from Friends - Rachel , Monica and Phoebe attend a tap class

Last week I was in New York staying with my friend and we decided to go to a modern jazz dance class at her gym on Sunday morning. I do zumba so I figured, how hard can it be? As it turns out, it was really hard. I realised our error as it slowly dawned on me that everyone else in the class were actually dancers. The instructor was surely straight out of Broadway and the whole class felt like a bad scene from A Chorus Line. We had a hoot though, the fact we couldn't follow the steps at all did not detract from our enthusiasm. I hopped around like a baby elephant doing jazz hands and generally enjoying myself.

It called to mind the fabulous episode of Friends (season 1) where Monica has her identity stolen and attends a dance class to try and find out who took it. All three of them are told 'you dance a dance class'. Quite right too! I love it and it still makes me giggle. Watch it here.

Favourite scenes from Friends - Rachel and Monica lose their apartment

This episode where Ross stages a quiz and pits Joey and Chandler against Monica and Rachel is one of my favourites in the entire 10 seasons. I think my favourite questions is "How many categories of towels does Monica have*?" I do relate to Monica.

It's brilliantly played by all the cast and you can tell they are really having fun with it. The question that slays them is, of course, "What is Chandler's job?" We never really know what Chandler does and it's an ongoing joke in the series so it's a stroke of genius to include it. I also love Rachel saying she can't live in Joey and Chandler's apartment: "This is a boy's apartment!"

I can only find this version of it with subtitles in another language but nevertheless, enjoy!

Favourite scenes from Friends - Joey and Janice's Day of Fun!

Of all the recurring characters in Friends, Janice is my favourite. I love her nasal voice, her crazy wardrobe and she has some of the best lines. It's exactly right that Chandler one other serious relationship would be someone as insane as Janice.

There are many favourite moments; when Chandler pretends he is moving to Yemen to escape her, when she is in labour the same time as Rachel, when she calls Chandler pathetic in the grocery store, when she says she gets allergies and it makes her nasal. But I chose this one because I love what she is wearing more than anything else. Maggie Wheeler does not get enough credit.

Favourite scenes from Friends - The Doctor who Loves Fonzie

This episode came to mind as I heard that Henry Winkler received an honorary OBE yesterday. As a reminder, I love Happy Days. So this episode always tickled me. I am not quite sure why Phoebe objects so much to a doctor who loves the Fonz. Who doesn't love the Fonz?

Anyway, it's another very funny one but my favourite bit is when he says "I need a clamp, a sterile towel and channel 31."

Favourite scenes from Friends - Rachel and the pigeon

This opening scene is brilliantly acted by Jennifer Aniston who manages to make the whole thing look like a coincidence. Plus, she looked so good in the early episodes before she went Atkins diet crazy and ironed her hair.

Favourite scenes from Friends - Joey's moo point

What I love about Friends is how much of it seeps into every day living. I find myself saying "it's a moo point" and wondering why the other person doesn't get it. Yes, some people have never watched Friends, the weirdos.

Joey and his moo point kills me. I think my favourite bit is when he says: "It's a cow's opinion." The line is delivered perfectly by Matt Le Blanc. I've accepted I can't embed any links from Friends so click on that link above and have a Wednesday night giggle.

Favourite scenes from Friends - Ross hits on Isabella Rosselini

I always liked Ross and Rachel together, especially in seasons 2 & 3 before they split up and then got back together and blah blah blah. I think Jennifer Aniston is a gifted comedic actress which must be why I have sit through many of her, frankly dire, films.

This scene in which Ross laments that he didn't put Isabella Rosselini on his laminated list of women he gets a free pass from Rachel to hit on is hilarious for the way Rachel delivers the line: "Honey, he's about to hit on Isabella Rosselini, I'm just sorry I don't have popcorn!" Makes me laugh every time.

Favourite scenes from Friends - Rachel and Monica fight

A new series in which I highlight some of my favourite scenes from Friends. I still miss Friends, it was so perfect, I watch it when it's on TV (which is pretty much all the time) and I do wonder if we'll ever have a sitcom quite so comforting again. Every cast member is wonderful, the lines are hilarious and it's just pure escapism for 23 minutes.

I couldn't choose a favourite character as it depends which season I am watching. For example, I dislike Joey in season 1 but by season 7, he's a firm favourite.

I give you Rachel and Monica when I really did love them both in season 2. I can't embed so you'll have to watch it here. Still makes me giggle now.
